Self-Defense Classes for Women

Why Self-Defense classes for Women? Why Female Self-Defense Classes? Why not Self-Defense classes for all? While I teach all genders and have taught various cultures, races, socio-economic standings, differently-abled, and people from diverse gender backgrounds, I am a woman. I have an understanding of women and girls since that has been my lens. I was a girl and had several experiences as a girl, which allow me the privilege to relate to young girls. Girl self-defense classes near me were not a thing growing up. I was fortunate growing up because my mother found female self-defense classes, along with all gender self-defense trainings. I was able to train in something called Warrior Spirit Training with Jeff Alexander. That was Sylvester Stallone's trainer for the movie Rocky. It was an amazing opportunity, a rights of passage, and in a way, empowered healing. I was lucky to find self-defense classes for females near me because that was pretty much nonexistent in my younger years. If I wanted to find self-defense training near me, I had to go to a martial arts school, and sadly, that did not give me the answers I was looking for. I wanted more. I wanted a safe space, predominantly taught by women. While Jeff Alexander's was conducted by himself, he was extremely trauma-informed, which is something of great value to me. My most recent certification in Empowerment Self-Defense gave me the added tools I was looking for to bring the full scope of work I wanted to offer women themselves. Now, as shared, I do work with men and transgender people. I find it necessary to distinguish why I promote female self-defense classes and girls self-defense classes near me. According to World Population Review, there have been 84,767 rape cases in the United States of American this year alone, and we are only in February. This is a conversation that many tend to sweep under the rug because it has been normalized. Domestic violence, violence in general, is a global pandemic. We have been lucky to find new innovative ways to offer Online Self-Defense Classes during the other pandemic, Covid-19, but it is my belief that women's self-defense and self-defense classes for girls need to be available everywhere. All people deserve to learn safety and violence prevention strategies. It is why I do all I can for my part in offering Empowerment Self-Defense Courses online. When looking for self-defense class for women or girls, make sure to ask the instructors these key questions:

  • Do you have a female instructor as your lead? If not, how do you teach with a gender-informed lens?

  • How many years have you taught self-defense classes? Who were your trainers?

  • Do you teach trauma-informed tactics?

  • Do you teach de-escalation tactics and boundary setting?

  • How do you offer support to women and girls who have been victimized?

  • How do you cater classes so that you are teaching in a trauma-informed way?

It is crucial to get instructors that fit your needs and your comfort. Having an instructor who works is why I have a network of Empowerment Self-Defense Instructors globally of all genders I can recommend if I am not the right fit.
