Empowerment Self-Defense classes for girls and women is a journey beyond the physical realm, tapping into your mental and emotional state of being. As shared, I have done this work for 18-years. I have added my own life experiences to cultivate a methodology for my teaching, which is effective for women of a wide range of different shapes and sizes. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work with women and girls, aiding them in removing barriers in their life that have been holding them back. I do this now in group sessions, individually, with organizations or movements. I work both online and in-person, allowing women and girls to learn in ways that are the easiest for them to digest. We all learn differently. To support the diverse learning styles out there, I have also developed my online empowerment self-defense course, providing visual and written tools and techniques. I go over scenario-based learning in my coaching sessions so that those who need it can better visualize different issues that may arise, which could be a verbal conflict or a physical confrontation.

Why is the Process of Empowerment So Important for Women and Girls?

When a woman or girl goes through their journey of empowerment, it is a rights of passage, a personal journey of finding yourself and your most in-depth understanding of who you are as a human being. One of my greatest moments as a young girl was my rights of passage into womanhood, a ceremony that took one year and four changing of the seasons. I received the guidance and care of women of different ages and cultures. Being part Native, I was honored to have the opportunity. The Native American community holds a rights of passage as a celebration. This ceremony was a process allowing women and girls the chance to receive renewed confidence and a heightened sense of self. For girls, it was a bridge into womanhood. For women, it was a deeper level of understanding within and an acknowledgment of the journey from whence you had come. If you look at my logo, there is the Celtic Trinity Knot. As a part Celtic woman, I honor the Celtic Trinity recognizing the Mother, Maiden, and Crone. This is a woman’s cycle of life. I have worked with women and girls, starting as young as three and as old as ninety-two. My journey as a teacher is a process of ongoing learning, growing, expanding, and cultivating knowledge to share with my students.

Some statistical data for girls in Hawaii that are relevant to look at and think on while trying to decide if self-defense for girls in your life is important:

Girls in Hawaii ranked 27th out of 50 states on an overall index of well-being that includes measures of girls’ physical health and safety, economic well-being, education, emotional health, and extracurricular activities. In 2012, about 15% of girls ages 5 to 17 in Hawaii were Latina, 13% were white, 0.2% were American Indian, 2% were African American, 40% were Asian, and 31% identified with other racial groups. About 30% of girls ages 5 to 17 in Hawaii live in immigrant families, compared with 24% of school-age girls nationwide. What one can take from this data is that while we are in mid-level ranking for well-being in the overall United States, our wellness is not the greatest for being the sunny/happy state.

My home state of Washington is also ranked midlevel for wellness and well-being. Taking into account they social, economic, and health issues affecting the 556,681 girls ages 5 to 17 living in Washington, girls in Washington rank 24th out of 50 states on an overall index of well-being that includes measures of girls’ physical health and safety, economic well-being, education, emotional health, and extracurricular activities. Also, here is the breakdown in race: In 2012, about 19% of girls ages 5 to 17 in Washington were Latina, 60% were white, 1% were American Indian, 4% were AfricanAmerican, 8% were Asian, and 7% identified with other racial groups. About 26% of girls ages 5 to 17 in Washington live in immigrant families,* compared with 24% of school-age girls nationwide.

So, what is it that can be gained from this data to help with girl’s overall well-being?

Often, girls well-being increases when there is a deeper connection to community, they are utilizing self-care strategies, and they are educated on both physical health but also emotional health as well.

I have been blessed with the opportunity to teach empowerment trainings and empowerment self-defense both locally and globally (Mahalo to technology). In my local classes, workshops, and trainings, I have taken women and girls through mother/daughter sessions to get better connected with their tweens and teens. I have an 8-Week Series I do for female owned businesses, organizations, non-profits, and other leadership groups focused on Empowerment, team building, and clear communication. Additionally, I have designed a 10-week series for in-school and after school empowerment for middle school and high school girls.

Nearly one in six adolescents (16.3%), aged 14‐17, have been sexually victimized;

How do we prevent these tragedies from occurring? Utilizing preventative action. We must teach our daughters and the girls in our lives how to be self-sufficient and proactive with their safety, how to have situational, internal, and social awareness. It is important for girls to understand their boundaries and how to vocalize them. Hence the importance of self-defense classes for women and girls becomes more than important.

Need Of Self-Defense Classes For Women

In 2019, over 652,676 women were raped in the United States. One of the most shocking facts about sexual assault is that approximately only 5% of sexual assault reports filed have been proven false.

  • 82% of all juvenile sexual assault victims are female.

  • 90% of adult rape victims are female.

  • 41% of sexual assaults against Native Indians are committed by a stranger (Noted: Statistical data suggests that with other cultural backgrounds 85-90% of assaults are by people who the victim knows). How has the de-humanization of Native American women and eroticism of Indigenous women added to this statistic?

Looking at the above data, it becomes more than mandatory for them to join self-defense classes and they can do that by searching for women’s self-defense near me in Hawaii or they can go to the contact page and connect with me there.

It is unfortunate that many women who walk through my door have already experience some forms of trauma in their lives due to sexual harassment, bullying, or sexual assaults. They have dealt with unhealthy relationship dynamics and have had to find their own way out. Working with women who have experienced trauma, gives them the opportunity to rise, to uplift themselves, to support their growth and tap into their level of understanding. I am grateful and honored when women choose to walk through my door after they have experienced those adverse scenarios in their life. Taking that step may be their first step towards healing.
